WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Ranking Member Mark Takano (D-Calif.) released the following statement after the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced that it had permanently housed over 40,000 homeless veterans in 2022 – exceeding the Department’s goal of housing 38,000 veterans in 2022.

“I applaud VA, Secretary McDonough, and VA’s dedicated staff for surpassing their goal in housing veterans experiencing homelessness – a goal that was surpassed because VA prioritized addressing veteran homelessness with urgency," said Ranking Member Takano. “VA’s announcement this morning is also evidence that Congress’ efforts to help veterans experiencing homelessness are working – but we have to keep up the momentum. Since January 2020, the number of veterans who were experiencing homelessness declined by 11 percent, thanks largely to House Democrat-led provisions in bills like the American Rescue Plan and the Isakson and Roe Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act. Committee Democrats will continue to take the steps necessary to preserve ‘housing first’ principles and supportive services that are key to preventing and ending veteran homelessness and ensure all veterans have a safe and stable place to call home.”
